The studio is now favoring Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) or Tara Sutaria, an Indian actress who has starred in a couple Indian adaptations of Disney Channel original series, for the role of Jasmine. And while Will Smith has been confirmed for the Genie, taking on the late, great Robin William's iconic role, Disney is scouring far and wide for their diamond in the rough - an actor of Middle-Eastern/Indian descent in his twenties who can sing and act. In case you missed the '90s, Aladdin is about a young man from the streets of Agrabah who teams up with a genie to win the affection of princess Jasmine.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is struggling to cast the lead roles of Jasmine and Aladdin. As THR points out, an extensive casting process helped create successful films.

It's said the studio was interested in both Dev Patel, 27, and Riz Ahmed but now is looking like the star will most likely be a rookie. Even in 1993, audiences took issue with Aladdin's portrayal of Arab culture.
