Homeland Security Makes 15000 More H-2B Work Visas Available

The Department of Homeland Security said yesterday they're going to allow an additional 15,000 workers to come in under the H-2B visa category, which is typically used by USA businesses in industries like tourism, construction, and seafood processing.

Federal officials said there were not enough qualified and willing American workers available to perform certain types of temporary nonagricultural work. In the statement, the department said Kelly was concerned Congress was "passing the buck" by not designating a specific number of visas and hoped the one-time occurrence was an anomaly.

Many seasonal businesses such as resorts, landscaping companies and seafood harvesters and processors had sought permission to temporarily hire more immigrants.

Businesses must first attest that their firms would suffer permanent "irreparable harm" without importing foreign workers and will be required to retain documents proving that they would not otherwise be able to meet their contractual obligations, the officials said. "We will carefully review the details of the rule and communicate best next steps to our members to ensure they have the information necessary to quickly get approved seasonal workers to the U.S.to support full-time, domestic staff to operate at full capacity".

While, advocates who favor stricter immigration limits have criticized the decision to issue the 15,000 additional visas, saying American workers should get job openings. "The Administration's decision to increase the number of H-2B visas will only exacerbate this problem".

Between 2013 and 2015, his Mar-a-Lago property - also known as the "Winter White House" - employed 246 workers on the H-2B visa.

The decision contradicts a key Trump campaign promise-protecting the most vulnerable American workers from foreign competition.

Advocates of a tight immigration policy, including many on the right who helped propel President Donald Trump's campaign, have claimed seasonal worker visas depress wages and take jobs away from U.S. workers.

The H-2B Temporary Nonagricultural Worker program was created to serve USA businesses unable to find a sufficient number of qualified U.S. workers to perform nonagricultural work of a temporary nature.

For "Made in America" week, the Trump administration wanted to highlight American manufacturing, which the President has repeatedly said he will "bring back".

President Donald Trump himself has used the visas to hire temporary workers at his golf resorts in Palm Beach and Jupiter, Fla.

The department has described the move as offering "relief to American businesses in danger of suffering irreparable harm" by not having enough workers.

Last month, a bipartisan group of senators urged Kelly to act quickly in order to help seasonal business fill positions for the summer.
