Indian women's cricket team felicitated by Sports Minister Vijay Goel

Ace Tennis player Sania Mirza recently praised the Indian Women's cricket team and its skipper Mithali Raj for their excellent performance in ICC Women's World Cup.

On Wednesday night, the Indian team was given a stirring reception when they returned to Mumbai from London. The girls have made us proud and they should rewarded adequately.

The team came from England in batches with the first one coming as early as 2.30 am but that didn't stop fans flocking the airport. I experienced an nearly similar scenario when we reached the final in 2005, but we were not part of BCCI at that time.

The Women in Blue performed extremely well throughout the tournament before ending up as runner-up, going down by nine runs to England in a nail-biting final at Lord's on July 23.

It was also learnt that despite the growing demands for a Women's IPL, the BCCI would like to "wait and watch" primarily because there are not enough women cricketers around who can rub shoulders with the best in business. "I was wondering had we been under BCCI at that time what kind of reaction we would get", said Mithali. The girls must have enjoyed this kind of reception this time.

The labourers, mostly from Punjab, were taken hostage by ISIS when it overran Iraq's second largest city Mosul in 2014. Iraq Foreign Minister Dr Ibrahim al-Jaafari arrived in New Delhi on Monday morning for a five-day visit to India .

Prabhu declared team skipper Mithali Raj and her deputy Harmanpreet Kaur as gazetted officers and announced out-of-turn promotions to the other eight Railway players.

On Thursday, Sports Minister Vijay Goel felicitated the 15 heroines for their journey to the finals, saying their feats will spark a revolution in women's cricket in the country.

Asked if there should be a tournament like the Indian Premier League for women in India, Mithali said this was something for the Board of Control for Cricket in India to deal with.

With Twenty20 World Cup lined-up next year in West Indies, the 34-year-old felt India has long way to go in the shortest format.
