Jong-nam murder: Why was 'James' allowed to leave?

The two women are the only suspects in custody in a killing that South Korea's spy agency said was part of a five-year plot by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to kill a brother he reportedly never met.

They have been charged with murder for smearing the face of victim Kim Jong Nam with the deadly VX agent at a crowded Kuala Lumpur area airport terminal on Feb.13.

No plea was recorded during yesterday's proceedings because the plea from both accused will be recorded on the first day of the trial, Justice Azmi said.

He also said he had doubts about the experts' report showing that VX, a chemical described by the United Nations as a weapon of mass destruction, was used in the killing.

The women, who face the death penalty if convicted, say they were duped into believing they were taking part in a reality TV show.

However, Pyongyang still denies playing any role in the assassination and has not acknowledged the deceased as Kim Jong Nam, whose estranged half brother Kim Jong Un came to power in 2011. The suspects are both expected to fight the charges, though the judge declined to hear a plea on Friday.

"We will ensure that the rights of the accused persons will be respected and they will receive a fair trial", Huong's lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told reporters outside the courthouse.

About 200 police officers were deployed outside the High Court in Sham Alam for the high-profile case, including armed officers.

James, identified by police as Ri Ji U, was among seven North Korean suspects wanted by Malaysian police. Nine Malaysians, who were prevented from leaving Pyongyang, were freed and three North Koreans in Malaysia were allowed to go home, under the terms of the agreement.

Soon after their arrest, Aishah and Huong claimed they were unwitting pawns in the assassination, which the USA and South Korean intelligence believe was orchestrated by Kim Jong-un or his agents.
