Priebus Allies: White House Chaos 'Unsustainable,' Trump 'Demeaned' Him

Within days of his appointment, Scaramucci, who was added to the roster of top aides who circumvent the chief of staff and report directly to the President, took to the airwaves and suggested Priebus was responsible for leaks coming out of the White House.

The newly minted communications director joins the ranks of three other staffers who also do not take home any pay: first daughter and senior adviser Ivanka Trump, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner and Reed Cordish, who is an assistant to the president for intergovernmental and technology initiatives, according to a 16-page document that details the salaries of almost 400 White House staffers.

But Congressman Peter King, who accompanied Trump aboard the Air Force One to NY and back, told reporters that he saw no indication of Priebus' exit during the flight.

Priebus' hold on the White House job has always been in question, more so this week after Trump's new communications director badmouthed him to a reporter for the New Yorker.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff", Trump told his more than 34.8 million followers on twitter soon after his return from NY.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said discussions about Priebus's departure had been taking place for weeks.

White House Director of Social Media Dan Scavino, left, walks with former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus as they step off Air Force One as they arrives Friday, July 28, 2017, at Andrews Air Force Base, Md. "Reince is doing a fantastic job at the White House, and I believe he has the president's confidence".

Scarmucci called a reporter for the New Yorker on Thursday and launched into a profanity-laced tirade in which he voiced his contempt for Priebus and other top Trump advisers.

But Priebus had also been a steady hand inside a West Wing that often found itself off-balance.

As Homeland Security secretary, Kelly has taken the lead on some of Trump's most controversial policies, including his executive orders suspending the admission of refugees and temporarily barring visitors from several Muslim-majority nations. Both Priebus and senior adviser Steve Bannon reportedly objected strenuously to the move. "He has been a true star of my administration", said the president.

On Friday, as Trump traveled to NY, he took both Scaramucci and Priebus on Air Force One with him. "We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him", he said.

Priebus, who hails from Wisconsin and has deep ties to House Speaker Paul Ryan, had grown increasingly isolated in the White House, as past Republican National Committee colleagues and other allies have left or been pushed out.

The issue of leaks has weighed heavily on President Donald Trump as his administration tries to navigate questions about contacts some Trump campaign associates may have had with Russian government officials.

"One friend said Priebus told him he was frustrated that he could not assert control over basic White House functions", the Post reports.

Democratic members of the House came out of one early meeting calling Kelly "dismissive" and expressing frustration.

If loyalty is indeed what Trump wants, he gets it in Kelly. "Secretary Kelly is one of the strongest and most natural leaders I've ever known".
