SC prison employee fired after inmate escape

Authorities continued to search Thursday for an inmate who has made his second escape from a maximum-security sc prison.

A SC inmate broke out of a maximum-security prison using wire cutters apparently flown in by drone, officials said Friday, describing a new and devilishly hard-to-stop means of escape.

Causey was serving life sentences in the Liebert Correctional Institution in Ridgeville, about 48 km northeast of Charleston, for holding a Columbia lawyer and his family at gunpoint in their home in 2004.

When he was captured hundreds of miles away early Friday morning in Austin, Texas, he was found at a Motel 6 with a semi-automatic gun, a pump shotgun, four cellphones and almost $50,000 in cash. He's now serving a life sentence for kidnapping his former attorney at gunpoint over the belief that said attorney did not do enough to defend him-which led to prison sentences in the 1990s-basically the plot to Cape Fear.

A year after he entered prison, he and another inmate escaped Broad River Correctional Institution near Columbia by hiding in a trash truck. Causey and Johnny Brewer were arrested three days later at a Jasper County motel.

Corrections officials said Friday that wire-cutters were delivered via drone to the prison to aid in his escape, and that cell phones were also used in planning the escape. Inside the room were more than $47,000 in cash, a semiautomatic pistol, a pump-action shotgun and four cellphones.

Keel said there were "a number" of people who assisted Causey, and said they intend to bring everyone who did so to justice.

State legislators and officials are questioning why Causey was not spotted escaping and why no one noticed he had not moved from his bed for 18 hours. During that time, he managed to travel about 1,200 miles to Texas, where he was caught at 4AM sleeping in a motel. Swerling had previously defended Causey, helping him get reduced prison sentences in two cases in the 1990s.

Corrections officials are working on bringing Causey back to SC.

Stirling said they're reviewing to see why it took so long to discover that Causey was gone, and there will be a review to see if proper procedure was following.

This was Causey's second escape from a state prison. The source of the money was not disclosed. officials with the authority to jam cellphone signals at their institutions.
