Sinkhole swallows homes in Florida, appears to be moving toward nearby lake

Florida authorities this morning asked multiple families to evacuate their homes after a sinkhole swallowed up an entire house and almost 60 percent of another one in their neighborhood, police said.

Pasco County officials are asking people to not come out to the sinkhole location.

WFLA-TV said the sinkhole started out about the size of a small swimming pool, but increased in size.

County building officials have deemed about 10 homes unsafe and say more may be affected.

The Pasco County fire chief says it grew in a matter of minutes. The depression quickly turned into a sinkhole and two houses slid into it, Guthrie said.

A fast-growing sinkhole is causing some to panic in Pasco County, Fla.

But there was concern that the hole could expand to the lake near the homes, he said.

Shortly after ABC Action News arrived on scene, one of the homes collapsed into the sinkhole. The home was sold in 2015, according to records.

"It was frightening", Guthrie said.

Duke Energy has cut power in the area as a safety precaution. Two sisters renting that home with four other family members said they had left the house early Friday and returned to see their neighbor's home falling into the sinkhole.
