Trump tweets for full repeal of health law

Repeal and replace Obamacare is the strategy pushed by the ultra-conservatives of the Senate, who plan to disengage it, the more possible the federal State of the health system.

Senate Republicans had given themselves an unrealistic deadline of coming up with a bill reconciling the demands of their conservative and moderate members by Friday, before lawmakers broke for a long recess for July 4, the U.S. independence day.

On Tuesday, a revolt of republican senators has forced the majority to postpone to July, the debates and votes scheduled for this week.

After years of criticizing Obamacare, Republican leaders have struggled to build consensus on a replacement. Doing otherwise would invite accusations that Republicans were simply tossing people off coverage and would roil insurance markets by raising the question of whether, when and how Congress might replace the 2010 law once it was gone. On broad grounds, it's a test of whether the party's commitment to a conservative approach to taxes can withstand a collision with political reality - as well as with a conservative economic populism that found new footing with the candidacy of President Trump.

In his first Sunday news-show appearance, Marc Short, the White House legislative affairs director, noted that 49 senators had voted in the past for repealing Obamacare with the intention of passing a replacement later, something President Donald Trump suggested in a Twitter posting last week.

Underscoring the fissures within the GOP, conservative group leaders on that call welcomed Trump's suggestion but said it didn't go far enough because it could open the door to a subsequent bipartisan compromise to replace Obama's law.

Republicans have been talking about repealing Obamacare's taxes since before the bill be became law. Now the plan is to strike deals over the Congressional recess and reconsolidate in August.

Senate leaders also are rewriting their bill to provide $45 billion to combat opioid addiction and provide more financial assistance to low- and moderate-income Americans.

So McConnell is reworking the plan, hoping to find a sweet spot between conservatives and moderates that will get a majority and still conform to Senate rules. Instead, they are trying to obscure the reality that their bills would cut Medicaid by hundreds of millions of dollars (versus where funding is now set) and would increase the number of uninsured Americans by potential 20 million or more.

It's ludicrous that there aren't the votes to repeal Obamacare outright.

After the House bill passed, he held something akin to a conservative pep rally on the White House lawn, only to later call the measure "mean" as it hit the Senate.

But they have not settled on how they would finance all these changes, since conservatives oppose the centrists' push to preserve one of the bill's current taxes as a way of funneling more money to those who can not afford health coverage on their own.

As much as some senators and GOP spokespeople lied to minimize the bill's effects, polls indicated the public saw it - correctly - as gutting health care for the less fortunate while granting $600 billion in tax cuts mainly to wealthy Americans. "We should do repeal, with a delay".
