Trump tweets that Gen. John Kelly is new chief of staff

In what may have been the wildest week of the Trump administration so far, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus resigned and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has stepped up in his place.

The Friday afternoon announcement comes after a week of turmoil in the White House, in which the president's new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, assailed Priebus in a profanity-laced interview with the New Yorker.

After months of speculation about Priebus' fate, Trump tweeted the decision just as he landed in Washington after an event in NY in which he lavishly praised Kelly's performance at Homeland Security.

After months of speculation about Priebus's fate, Trump tweeted his decision as he landed in Washington after a speech in NY in which he lavishly praised Gen Kelly's performance at Homeland Security. He's a great great American.

Kelly, 67, a retired four-star Marine Corps general, is now secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and will assume the chief of staff post on Monday.

The former Republican National Committee chairman faced a hard task from the outset as he attempted to wrangle a hodgepodge of rival staff factions divided by ideology and allegiance, his influence supplanted by several other top advisers - including the President's own kin - who reported directly to Trump and not to the chief of staff.

Priebus was tapped for the post at the urging of top congressional Republicans - including House Speaker Paul Ryan, a fellow Wisconsinite - who advised Trump that he needed a Washington insider to help him shepherd his legislative agenda.

In his interview with CNN, Priebus said he submitted his resignation to the President privately on Thursday.

P:riebus, the former Republican National Committee head, was the frequent target of rumors about his job security, the victim of a long whisper campaign by Trump allies and the subject of a remarkable public rebuke this week by the new White House communications director.

Mr Priebus's extraordinary ability to build and maintain relationships with his party's power brokers and grassroots set him apart from other prospective chiefs of staff at the time.

Trump announced Kelly's appointment on Twitter shortly before 5 p.m. and only afterward sent out another message thanking Priebus for his service.

Priebus represented a more conventional breed of senior White House figure, chosen by the president despite a career defined by the calculations of traditional Republican Party politics, which Trump regards as part of "the swamp" he was elected to drain.

Trump issued his decision just as he landed aboard Air Force One after a visit to Long Island.

Gregory Duco, head of USA economics at Oxford Economics, said: "The ideological healthcare reform battle in Congress, and ongoing political rumblings in DC, are weighing on consumers' expectations". "I'm feeling good about the fact that he's making a change that makes him comfortable with moving forward". "I'm not going to get into the mud, " Priebus said. He praised what he said was a "guy from Kenosha, Wisc. who revitalized the Republican National Committee and became White House chief of staff". Those orders have been stripped down by courts pending a Supreme Court review this fall. "I don't know how to explain it any better than that, but it's very incredible". Yet, just days after taking office, Kelly had to lead the agency as it dealt with the chaos and confusion that ensued at airports in the USA and around the world.
