India has expressed concerns after North Korea conducted its first successful test of a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-14 under the supervision of Kim Jong-un and has said that such an action adversely impacts India's national security and undermine worldwide peace and stability. This is reportedly meant to be used as a defense against a simulated ballistic missile attack.

Some experts have said that the nuclear-capable missile North Korea just tested, the Hwasong-14, can reach Alaska.

Most recently, North Korea claimed its first successful ICBM launch ever.

The agency's spokesperson Chris Johnson reportedly confirmed that the testing for the THAAD weapon system will be conducted at the Pacific Spaceport Complex located in Kodiak, Alaska.

"Through this drill, the South Korean and USA air forces demonstrated strong determination to thoroughly punish the enemy for its provocative acts, and showed off their capability to pulverise enemy command posts", it said. This could be helpful in defending against any incoming missiles from North Korea.

Lockheed Martin said each THAAD system features five key components that include interceptors, launchers, a radar, a fire control unit and support equipment.

As the United States does not rule out potential military action against North Korea to annihilate its nuclear threat, on Wednesday, in a show of force, South Korean and American forces on the Peninsula launched surface-to-surface tactical missiles into neutral waters.

Mr Rudd's comments referred to the need for a system that would protect population centres such as Darwin - which is now potentially within range of North Korea's missiles - rather than the systems Mr Turnbull referred to.

The U.S. installed unspecified parts of THAAD in South Korea earlier this year, despite objections from China, Russia and even opposition from Seoul.

THAAD is able shoot down short, medium and intermediate ballistic missiles and the test will have the system attempt to detect, track and engage a target with an interceptor missile.

Earlier in July, Moscow and Beijing called on Washington to immediately halt the deployment of THAAD in South Korea.

Vice Admiral James Syring, a former director of the Missile Defense Agency, said in May the THAAD system has a 100% success rate in its 13 flight tests so far.
