It's been 38 years since a solar eclipse occurred in the US and 99 years since a total solar eclipse has swept across the USA from coast to coast.

The deepest part of the shadow, or umbra, cast by the moon fell over a 70-mile-wide, 2,500-mile-long "path of totality" traversing Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and SC.

People near the area of totality of the Great American Eclipse were treated to an fantastic sight on Monday, as the sky was engulfed in total darkness.

Approximately 300 people viewed the "Great American Eclipse" at the central branch of the Newport Beach Public Library on Monday morning. A video submitted to WHSV by Patrick Flanagan, showing a timelapse of the eclipse over Silver Lake, can also be watched above. As the moon's eclipse of the sun increased, the amount of daylight present became less and less and the sky grew dimmer.

NASA officials say eclipse glasses can be reused indefinitely if the filters aren't scratched, punctured or torn.

Tiffany Racey, a sophomore of Tunnel Hill, said she already has her special glasses, and will watch the eclipse at home with her family.

The sun's corona flashing out from behind the moon during Monday's total solar eclipse as seen from Weiser, Idaho. We'll have a total solar eclipse in our neck of the woods in the year 2099. Often this line of totality is in locations uninhabited and very hard to reach. "Every time the sun came out from the clouds everybody started cheering".

Another called the eclipse "amazing". "We hope that they are going that next step further and asking what else is NASA doing?"

"It's a once in a life time experience", Burritt said. By using a longer shutter speed, I was able to achieve a sharp eclipse while simultaneously capturing the motion blur of the clouds via the long exposure.

The next total solar eclipses will occur on July 2, 2019 over South America, Dec. 14, 2020 over South Africa and South America then April 20, 2023 over Australia. On a whim, I asked to borrow a pair of eclipse viewing glasses. Later documentations of solar eclipses include predictions and even poems.

Whereas eclipses and their effects have been feared by most traditions and cultures, meditators patiently wait for such moments to come forth.
