Blast in Shi'ite mosque kills 20 in Afghanistan

A security source told Khaama Press at least 20 people were killed, and another 30 were injured and transported to nearby health facilities.

A blast that rocked Afghanistan's provincial capital of Herat on Tuesday has claimed lives of at least 20 people, local news agency reported.

According to a local police spokesman, Abdulhai Walizada, there appeared to be more than one attacker, with a suicide bomber who detonated explosives and another who threw grenades at worshippers.

Officials initially said two attackers had been involved in the incident, but in a statement issued by the governor, he said only one had been involved.

The assault on the Jawadya mosque in Herat, which is close to Afghanistan´s border with Iran, came a day after the Daesh group claimed a deadly attack on the Iraqi embassy in Kabul. It is not clear what the intended target was.
