Contaminated eggs supplied to Irish food businesses, says FSAI

In Romania - the country identified in media reports as where Belgium's Poultry-Vision bought its supply of fipronil - one tonne of egg yolk liquid contaminated with the insecticide was found.

"The products affected are processed foods in which egg is one ingredient among many others, mostly used in sandwich fillings or other chilled foods".

The decision to withdraw the products was not due to food safety concerns but based on the fact that the pesticide is not authorised for use in food-producing animals.

But they say the number is a tiny fraction of the eggs consumed each year in the country.

A major product recall in now underway in the United Kingdom off the back of the British Food Standards Agency's announcement about the levels of contamination there.

FSA chairwoman Heather Hancock said: "I'm confident that acting quickly is the right thing to do".

"It is likely that the number of [affected] eggs that have come to the United Kingdom is closer to 700,000 than the 21,000 we previously believed had been imported", the government agency said in a statement. It's banned by the European Union from being used to treat animals destined for human consumption, but it's believed that a disinfectant containing the pesticide was used on some chicken farms in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The FSA says that in the United Kingdom, the Dutch eggs were used in processed foods with many other ingredients - mostly sandwich fillings or other chilled foods.

Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda have pulled sandwiches, sandwich fillers, mayonnaise and salads which may contain eggs contaminated with fipronil, an insecticide which can cause nausea, vomiting, headaches and dizziness.

In the Netherlands the issue has continued to escalate with a spokesman for the Dutch farmers' lobby LTO saying that the crisis could force authorities to cull millions of chickens.

Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a spokeswoman of European Commission, notified Sweden and Switzerland to take measures for the contaminated eggs that may have entered their markets. It is considered slightly poisonous by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is hence forbidden on animals destined for the food chain to prevent damage to the human liver, thyroid and kidney. Scores of farms in the Netherlands and Belgium have been shut. All of them stock British Lion shell eggs but they use imported eggs in many of their other foods containing eggs.
