Jared Kushner Arrives in Israel to Attempt Palestinian Statehood Talks

On Thursday, they will meet separately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Donald Trump's team must commit to the two-state solution and opposing settlement construction before the U.S. president's peace push will move forward, Palestinian officials said Wednesday.

Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law turned senior adviser; Jason Greenblatt, his special representative for worldwide negotiations; and Dina Powell, a deputy national security adviser, are touring the region this week with Middle East peace as their focus.

Mustafa Barghouthi, told PNN that the message of the protest is to show disapproval of the American bias towards Israel, adding that if the delegation is serious about achieving a just and comprehensive peace, it must pressure the Israeli government to stop the pccupation and ongoing settlement activity in the West Bank, which destroy the peace process. "I think that all of them are within our reach".

Kushner said Trump is "very committed to achieving a solution here that will be able to bring prosperity and peace to all people in this area".

"The relationship between Israel and America is stronger than ever, and we really thank Prime Minister Netanyahu for his leadership and his partnership".

PA Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told British Secretary of State for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt, "We convinced the worldwide community that the best way to reach a state is through negotiations".

Yet a USA delegation on the ground seeking to salvage peace talks between the two sides now faces increasing pressure to take a stand, with Palestinian Authority leadership, in particular, insistent that Trump recognize the two-state solution as the only viable path forward for peace.

The US delegation's visit to the region comes as Palestinian figures have become more vocal in expressing disappointment in Washington's unclear approach to peace efforts so far.

It was not clear whether Kushner offered any clarity during his three-hour meeting with Abbas.

"If we don't hear within a month and a half that the American team has stopped talking and started doing, Abbas intends to mobilize anyone and everyone he can for the UN General Assembly session on the establishment of a Palestinian state, regardless of the Israeli and American reactions", the official told Al-Monitor. "That's why we will ask them whether they have answers about the basic issues". I mean, why are you so loath to say - to commit yourself - to recommit yourself to the two-state solution?

ESTRIN: The White House issued a statement this afternoon saying there are likely to be a lot of ups and downs on the way to peace and making a peace deal will take time.
