Maduro: Venezuela-US Relations at 'Worst Moment'

Ortega, who fled Venezuela to Colombia with her husband German Ferrer last Friday and flew into Brasilia from Panama late on Tuesday, said Maduro enriched himself in a massive corruption scheme uncovered at Brazilian construction conglomerate Odebrecht.

She said Maduro's government "is violating the constitution and law to protect itself".

In a statement issued before she left Colombia, Ortega said she would tell the meeting about Maduro's involvement in "serious acts of corruption".

Ms Ortega said she had evidence implicating Maduro and other top officials in corruption involving Brazilian constructor Odebrecht and other companies, which she did not name.

The prosecutor appointed under Maduro to take Ortega's place dismissed her allegations, saying "they have no legal validity". New Prosecutor General Tarek William Saab launched an investigation into her husband, opposition lawmaker, over his alleged involvement in extortion practices.

Ortega broke ranks with Maduro to become his most high-ranking domestic critic as worldwide pressure on the president mounted.

The Mercosur trade bloc has suspended Venezuela due to the crisis there.

Last month, Maduro set up a new constitutional body packed with his allies, which a few days later removed Ortega from her post. However, she broke ranks with Maduro following the regime's bloody crackdown on anti-government protesters.

The latest frictions with the United States come amid political tension in Venezuela generated by the recent election of a controversial pro-Maduro Constituent Assembly that has the power to rewrite the Constitution, and anti-government protests that have left at least 120 dead in the past four months.

"In the Odebrecht case, we have discovered that they deposited $100 million for Diosdado Cabello to a Spanish company called TSE Arietis, whose owners are his cousins", she said.

Venezuela has since descended into chaos that has raised fears for regional stability.

Almost 130 people have been killed and hundreds more injured or detained since April, when anti-government protests erupted in response to the Supreme Court's decision to strip the opposition-held legislature of power.
