Sharif, 67, resigned during his third stint as prime minister after the Supreme Court ruled on July 28 that he should be disqualified and ordered a criminal probe into his family over allegations stemming from the "Panama Papers" leaks of worldwide offshore companies.

The Supreme Court sacked Sharif after an investigation into corruption allegations against him and his family, making him the 15th prime minister in Pakistan's 70-year history to be ousted before completing a full term.

According to media reports, as many as 35 candidates have filed nomination papers for the by-poll scheduled to be held on September 17.

On the other hand, the embattled ruling party, now on roads to muster public support, announced that it would nominate Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif as president though no official notification has been issued in this regard.

Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted by Supreme Court (SC) under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution in Panama Leaks case, on Friday resumed his "homecoming rally" towards Lahore via Grand Trunk Road after a stopover in Jhelum.

He asked Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers need not to worry, and added that they were progressing.

Sharif's political caravan slowly made its way into the rural areas of Punjab province en route to his hometown of Lahore.
