Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Thursday met the top military leadership to formulate a response to the new USA policy on Afghanistan that includes greater pressure on Islamabad to do more to rein in militants.

Referring to the visit of the USA commander to South Waziristan, he said that they all appreciated the efforts of Pakistan and its achievements against the scourge of terrorism, adding the country was lauded for restoring peace in the area.

China's Foreign Ministry defended its ally Pakistan earlier this week after President Donald Trump said the United States could no longer be silent about militants using safe havens on Pakistani soil - an allegation Islamabad denies.

The Trump administration is anxious that nuclear weapons and materials in Pakistan could land up in the hands of terror groups and the concerns are aggravated by the development of tactical weapons, a senior United States official has said.

On Tuesday, the day after Trumps speech, Ambassador Hale also met Khawaja Asif and briefed him about America's new policy in Afghanistan and South Asia.

"Pakistan has been supporting all global efforts for a peaceful Afghanistan".

He said the new USA strategy on Afghanistan has designed the presence of U.S. in Afghanistan in a way that the United States army will remain in Afghanistan for an unknown period of time.

"For its part, Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence and terror".

The Trump administration is anxious that nuclear weapons and materials in Pakistan might land up in the hands of terrorist groups or individuals, the senior administration official said, on condition of anonymity. "For decades, we have been fighting hard to have Washington lean toward India and see Pakistan for what it is", Shivangi said.
