The Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a ban on a practice that allows Muslim men to divorce their wives immediately and termed triple talaq "unconstitutional".

The panel of five judges from different religions has given the verdict. Indian Muslim Women's Movement has also played their part in the legal battle to end triple talaq.

The two judges who were in favor of law asked the government to discuss the matter with some Muslim Organizations who interfere with government's constitutional rights to govern such affairs.

"They can lead a life of dignity without any fear or apprehension that they can be thrown out of their matrimonial home any time", he said.

The top court began to hear the petitions challenging Triple Talaq in May after clubbing seven petitions challenging the practice.

Maliwal said that the apex court's ruling in this regard has empowered Muslim women in the country, who have been victims of the prompt divorce system.

This case was being keenly followed as it raised a major question regarding the fundamental rights of nearly 90 million Muslim women of India. Thus, the woman had won the case by 3:2 and the court have banned this method of divorce.

The government must now amend the sections of India's Muslim personal law that allows the practice known as triple talaq. "I congratulate the women who fought for justice".

Three of the judges branded the system "un-Islamic, arbitrary and unconstitutional" while another said it was not a central part of Islam. "We, the Muslim women, are entitled to justice from the courts as well as the legislature".

In 2016, Shayara Bano, a 35-year-old-woman, challenged the practice after her husband of 15 years divorced her instantly in a letter sent to her when she was visiting her parents.

Most Hindu personal law has been overhauled and codified over the years while the Muslim laws have been left to religious authorities and left largely untouched.
