Samsung unveils Gear Sport, Fit 2 Pro, & new IconX earbuds

Today Samsung officially announced three new devices: the Gear Sport smartwatch, the Gear Fit2 Pro fitness tracking wearable, and the Gear IconX 2018 wireless headphones. Speaking of swimming, the Gear Sport can track your swim workouts. Interestingly, this isn't a Gear S4, or anything that would suggest we're looking at a direct successor to the S3. The Gear Fit2 Pro has a 1.5-inch curved Super AMOLED display with high-resolution 432x216 touchscreen display.

Under the hood the Samsung Gear Sport packs in a Snapdragon 2100 chipset and 768MB of RAM, while there's 4GB of storage as well. If you're considering this watch, know that it fits somewhere between the Gear S3 and LTE-ready S3. (You still turn it to navigate between screens as well). The watch itself has military-grade specs, and is water-resistant up to 5 ATM, or 164 feet. With Running Coach, for example, the Gear IconX becomes your own personal trainer, giving you updates and tips even without your phone nearby. A number of new features have been introduced with this watch such as: An improved caloric counter, support for Samsung SmartThings, the ability to control a Powerpoint presentation with the watch or use the dial as a VR controller. This watch has support for NFC payments, but the hardware for Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) is not included.

Samsung is emphasizing the health and fitness aspects of this watch. For instance, if you're on a plane, it'll give you reminders to stretch or move around every so often. Everything from measuring the number of strokes or lap times, to tracking which stroke the user is doing is all possible on the 5ATM certified** Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro with the Speedo app. Running on Tizen OS, the Gear Sport is compatible with Android smartphones running 4.3 JellyBean OS and above, and Apple iPhones running iOS 9 or above. It offers a 1.2 inched AMOLED display. There's a dual-core 1GHz processor, Tizen, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, a 200mAh battery, and a small strap (fits 125~165mm wrist sizes) or large strap (fits 158~205mm wrist sizes).

However, as its name implies, the Gear Sport is targeted at the fitness enthusiast crowd. The black version has some understated ridging, while the Red features some aggressive geometric faceting on the bands. These new cord-free earbuds come equipped with Bixby Voice that can be activated with a simple tap and hold. The Gear IconX also boasts of a new talent its predecessor never got the chance to have.

The smartwatch, fitness tracking band, and fully wireless earbuds are all updates to previous Samsung Gear products, and are aimed at going "beyond fitness" - meaning Samsung hopes these can be incorporated into everyday life.

I tried them on at the Tempodrom, and was pleasantly surprised by their fit. Gear Fit2 Pro will be available on September 15, 2017 through Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, Macys,, Sprint and U.S. Cellular.

Functionality-wise, Samsung claims to have upgraded the heart rate sensor to a more precise and reliable one, which is very good news.

Smart sensors and the Speedo On app allow key swim metrics like Lap count, lap time and stroke time to be tracked easily with swimming goals now counting toward your daily achievements. It's Speedo's first app on any device, but it's hard to tell just yet whether this will actually appeal to swimmers.

It also inherits the full color, Always-On Display from the Gear S3 as well, ensuring key information - such as the time - is always displayed while using minimal power.
