Second West Nile case confirmed in Beaufort County this year

No human cases of West Nile virus have yet been diagnosed. But the West Nile-carrying mosquitoes have been found farther afield, in Hartford and New London counties, Armstrong said Thursday. Kentucky's cases include one in Fayette County, two in Hopkins County, and one in Jefferson County.

The West Nile virus has been detected in every state. Forty-four percent of cases have been hospitalized.

That includes wearing long sleeves and trousers at dawn and dusk, applying DEET-fortified mosquito repellent, securing window screens and dumping even minuscule amounts of standing water, which mosquitoes use for breeding, according to Vector Control.

Use repellants containing DEET, picaradin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 which are the best when used according to label instructions. In humans, the virus has an incubation period of three to ten days. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin. And making sure screens around your home are in good fix is important, too.

Various locations are also being monitored to decrease the chances of West Nile infection.
