The Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 2:51 p.m. The event will be streamed live. The aerospace company was also able to successfully land the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket on a barge floating in the Pacific Ocean. This was the 15th successful landing of a Falcon 9 first stage in 40 liftoffs, and the ninth to land on a ship.

SpaceX later discontinued the Falcon 1, moving Formosat-5 to a larger Falcon 9 vehicle. Prior to this, the most SpaceX had ever launched in a year was eight rockets. As such, the company's West coast pad may well remain unused well into the future, and SpaceX may simply have chosen to focus their pad engineers on the far more pressing and time sensitive work going on at SpaceX's East coast launch facilities.

"Formosat-5 also hosts a secondary scientific payload, an Advanced Ionospheric Probe (AIP), developed by Taiwan's National Central University", they added.

To watch the launch, and to see if Musk and company can recover its rocket by landing it on a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean, all you have to do is click play on the above video at 2:51pm. As of now, the company has already re-flown two of its used Falcon 9 boosters.
