He responded that Trump "has inside information that I don't have", including "videos" of "historical purists" who just wanted to preserve the Robert E. Lee statue located in the park where the rally occurred.

Falwell Jr. said one reason he supported Trump in the crowded GOP presidential primary in 2016 was, "He doesn't say what's politically correct".

Trump also decried the removal of Civil War monuments to the Confederacy that several cities have deemed offensive for their connection to slavery.

Falwell Jr. also said, "I think the president has made it very clear that there is no moral equivalency between what the counterprotesters did ...and somebody driving his vehicle into a crowd because he hates people of other races".

Raddatz pointed to that comments and asked Falwell to react.

Falwell also pushed back against the notion that Trump has inspired neo-Nazis' hateful anti-Jewish rhetoric.

He wrote on Twitter he was "so proud" of Mr Trump for his "bold truthful" statement on the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville which saw neo-Nazis, KKK members and "alt-right" members clash with counter-protesters and three people killed.

Democrats and Republicans business executives artists and other religious leaders have criticized Trump for saying'both sides share blame for the violence in Charlottesville. Trump is seen commenting on Charlottesville at Trump Tower in New York last

They are also writing to Falwell's board of trustees, calling for his ouster, according to The Washington Post. Instead of condemning racist and white nationalist ideologies, Mr. Trump provided equivocal and contradictory comments.

"The president said Tuesday there were 'very fine people on both sides, '" she noted.

Jerry Falwell of Liberty University was fantastic on @foxandfriends.

Georgia Hamann, a 2006 alumna and an attorney in Phoenix, Ariz., helped pen the letter. "We have every intention to continue to extend invitations to him to contribute his perspective on issues important to all of us", he said. "The word in Baptist and evangelical circles is 'repent.'".

The alumni said they would be returning their diplomas to Falwell's office by September alongside letters explaining their reasoning for withdrawing support.

Full disclosure: I'm a Liberty graduate and, for what it's worth, I plan on keeping my diploma because, regardless of who Falwell supports, I worked hard for my degree. Rebekah Tilley graduated from Liberty in 2002 and now works in higher education in Iowa. "There's such a strong affiliation now between Liberty University and President Trump that you know that reflects badly on all alumni". I think he was talking about what he had seen ...

For Doug Johnson Hatlem, a 1999 graduate who now works as a Mennonite pastor in Ontario, Canada, Charlottesville feels like a tipping point for many alumni who have been concerned about the university's association with Trump. "Who were those very fine people marching with the Nazis?" "For there not to be an unconditional condemnation of that kind of action and behavior is just completely anathema". While not all of those were alumni - some were journalists reporting on the protest - Georgia Hamann, one of the organizers, said a conservative estimate was 50 people so far planning to send their diplomas back.
