Trump dictated son's misleading statement on meeting with Russian lawyer

The White House admitted Tuesday that President Donald Trump "weighed in" on the misleading statement released by his eldest son in response to revelations that Donald Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer in June 2016.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed details of the Post report Tuesday but confirmed the president did offer his thoughts.

Two senior-level sources confirmed to ABC News a Washington Post story on Monday that Trump personally dictated the July 8 statement on his son's behalf while returning to the US from the G-20 summit in Germany aboard Air Force One. The president dictated a statement saying the meeting had "primarily discussed a programme about the adoption of Russian children".

As reporters last month homed in on the 2016 meeting, Donald Jr initially issued a statement claiming they had discussed nothing more sinister than adoption. The information "would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father", read one of the emails.

And the president's lawyer a few times tried to distance Trump from the deceptive statement, in ways that were apparently untrue.

Does he feel he was misled by his son and by Jared Kushner if, indeed, they didn't tell him about these emails that they both received?

Jay Sekulow, who was a prominent attorney in the religious right movement before joining Team Trump, specifically told NBC News' "Meet the Press" that the president "was not involved in the drafting of the statement".

"When you put out a misleading statement it's gonna be hard to convince people to stop looking at other things", Senator Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) said. The subject line of the email from Trump Jr. inviting Kushner and Manafort to the meeting read "Russia - Clinton - private and confidential".
