Apple Admits Its New Apple Watch Series 3 Has a Big Problem

The brand new LTE Apple Watch Series 3 will start shipping this Friday. In a statement, Apple acknowledged the problem stems from the Watch attaching to "unauthenticated Wi-Fi wireless networks without connectivity".

Apple says it's "investigating a fix for a future software release".

But in reviews out today, some critics report the watch has crippling connectivity problems, including dropped or choppy calls and issues connecting with Siri, Apple's voice assistant. Series 3 should feature built-in cellular connection.

It's worth noting that some separate reviews of the Apple Watch Series 3 haven't mentioned such connectivity issues. At one point during the show, a woman paddle boarding without her smartphone (but wearing the new Apple Watch) stood on her board and called into the event, demonstrating the smartwatch's ostensible independence.

"On more than one occasion, I detached myself from the phone, traveled blocks away from my home or office, and watched the Watch struggle to connect to LTE", Goode noted.

For reviewers who got the Apple watch's cellular connection working, battery life became a challenge.

I have reached out to Apple asking for more information about the update and a possible fix as well as troubleshooting steps users can take once the watch is released.

With no hint of when the fix will be issued, this is something that's surely going to be a concern for anyone who has placed an order and is now waiting for their new Apple Watch to arrive.

Reviewers have also criticized a cosmetic change in the Apple Series 3 watch.

Verge writer Lauren Goode said the new Apple Watches she was testing tried to connect to unknown Wi-Fi networks instead of connecting to cellular when she was without her iPhone. "This is the first generation watch with LTE", he told Reuters.
