The White House said that President Donald Trump will meet the leaders of Japan and South Korea in NY next week to discuss the urgent threat posed by North Korea.

The U.N. Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting later Friday to discuss their response to the latest launch, which came only three days after the council unanimously approved new sanctions on Pyongyang for its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3.

"We're out of time", McMaster said. The US has been constantly threatening North Korea for years, with such threats rapidly escalating this year.

The US leader will host a lunch with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korea's Moon Jae-in on Thursday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Trump's National Security Adviser HR McMaster told a White House briefing.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said that combined with previous sanctions the United Nations has now banned 90 percent of North Korea's exports reported in 2016.

Earlier in the day, NATO called for a global response to North Korea's latest launch of a missile, which flew over northern Japan just days after the United Nations imposed new sanctions on Pyongyang for conducting its sixth nuclear test. Like his predecessors, Trump has opted for choices somewhere in between: economic sanctions and talk of eventual diplomacy or military action, depending on how North Korea responds.

The missile flew over northern Japan before falling into the Pacific and follows North Korea's sixth and most powerful nuclear test September 3.

"America and our allies will never be intimidated", Trump said.

North Korea yesterday fired an intermediate range ballistic missile over Japan and into the Pacific Ocean.

He said North Korea's launch hours earlier showed Pyongyang's "utter contempt for its neighbors and for the entire world community".

HALEY: With North Korea being front and center - Iran will be an issue.

The statement appeared unlikely to change North Korea's behavior.

The ambassador said she has "no problem kicking it to Gen. Mattis", the U.S. Defense Secretary, because "I think he has plenty of options".

Experts have long questioned if the US could indeed attack North Korea, given its ability to cause massive casualties south of the border.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also called for "new measures" against North Korea and said, "These continued provocations only deepen North Korea's diplomatic and economic isolation". "That creates openings for other leaders like President Emmanuel Macron of France to step up and say that actually they are the guys who are going to lead the United Nations more effectively from now on".
