Social activist and senior Kannada journalist, 55-year-old Gauri Lankesh, was shot dead in Bengaluru on Tuesday night by unidentified men at her residence who shot 7 seven bullets at her.

According to reports, Lankesh succumbed to multiple bullet wounds on her body.

Gauri was the editor of the popular Kannda tabloid "Lankesh Patrike".

Bengaluru, Sep 6: The shocking murder of noted journalist Gauri Lankesh on Tuesday night shook the peaceful, though dimly lit Ideal Homes locality in West Bengaluru's Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

Earlier in the day, Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation and former Karnataka Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda said the Central Bureau of Investigation must be handed the inquiry into Lankesh's murder, reported ANI.

Gauri was a journalist-activist, known for her anti- establishment, pro-poor and pro-Dalit stand. The neighbour also said they heard the sound of two scooters. "Gauri Lankesh collapsed before entering her house", he said. "Since last November, she has been fighting her conviction in a criminal defamation case against BJP MP in Dharwad Prahallad Joshi and was out on bail". Her brother Indrajit has demanded to hand over the case to CBI. We forced her to put some CCTV cameras in her house considering the theft incident at her home a while ago. Lankesh worked with various publications, including Sunday magazine, and later for a Telugu TV channel in New Delhi. "Gauri Lankesh lives on in our hearts", he said.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "Anybody who speaks against ideology of BJP-RSS is pressured, beaten, attacked and even killed".

Karnataka Police has launched a probe in to her killing.
