Katia weakens to tropical depression after making landfall in Mexico

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Katia had winds of 105 miles per hour (165 kph) early Friday afternoon, with strengthening expected. Irma is about 300 miles from Miami and moving about 13 mph toward the west.

Katia was downgraded to a tropical storm from a hurricane when it was about 185 kilometres northwest of Veracruz with sustained winds of 65 km/h, the centre said in an advisory.

It says the storm was centered about 130 miles (210 kilometers) north of the port of Veracruz and it seems headed for strike early Saturday in an area known as the Emerald Coast that is popular with Mexican tourists.

Forecasters warned that Hurricane Katia could strengthen as it moves toward the coast of Mexico early Friday.

Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century and a Category 5, spread devastation in Saint Martin, where it killed eight people, and Barbuda in the Caribbean as it took aim at Florida.

Katia was a smaller hurricane in comparison to more unsafe Irma and Jose. Irma, on the other hand, is almost 400 miles wide.

The hurricane center says the storm is expected to bring 10 to 15 inches of rain to the area, which has a history of deadly mudslides and flooding.

The 2017 hurricane season was projected to be unusually active, and that has certainly been the case so far. Hurricane Jose is expected to continue over the western Atlantic Ocean for several days. Katia is already the sixth.
