Newcastle United won 1-0 against Swansea City in the Premier League.

Skipper Jamaal Lascelles capped a fine display that included an excellent goal-line clearance by powering home Matt Ritchie's 76th-minute corner.

Newcastle's victory was achieved without manager Rafa Benitez as the Spaniard continues to recuperate from hernia surgery.

"Yeah, he wanted to come and wanted to do everything he could to attend but the weather conditions were not the best", he said.

"After the game, Rafa rang us and congratulated all the team because they did a fantastic job".

"We were very serious in some stages of the game, we were very compact, disciplined and worked hard together". Swansea now have one more point than Newcastle, having won four points from the opening three games.

"Swansea gave a debut to new loan signing from Bayern Munich Renato Sanches but the Portuguese midfielder faded after a bright opening and was eventually replaced by Wilfried Bony who returned to Swansea from Manchester City in the transfer window".

Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski produced a great save to deny Newcastle United striker José Luis Sanmartín Mato (Joselu) who fired a long range strike in the 33rd minute.

Paul Clement introduced returning striker Wilfried Bony in his place but the fan favourite could do little about Lascelles' thumping victor, the captain getting above Alfie Mawson to leave Fabianski with no chance.

"I said to the players in the dressing room, there's all the make-believe stuff, what's written on the paper and how we think it's going to go, and then there's the reality of what actually happens in the game".

We'll soon find out. It is down to us to bring it every week.

Paul Clement concedes he was surprised by the manner of Swansea's defeat to Newcastle and admits he expected something much better from his team.

De Miguel said on Friday: "It will be Rafa's decision, but also he is taking into consideration our feelings, I think in this case even more because he hasn't seen the players training and Rafa normally has this feeling for the momentum of everybody".
