Los Angeles will host Olympics in 2028

With a vote on Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2028 Games to Los Angeles as part of a historic move to select two host cities simultaneously.

International Olympic Committee celebrations in Lima, Peru, and in France as Paris is confirmed as the 2024 Games host.

While celebrating the decision, Paris and Los Angeles both expressed their excitement in bringing home the Olympic Games. It will be the third time that the Olympics will be staged in both LA and Paris. Initially agreed to over the summer, the three-way deal followed an exodus of other bidders for the 2024 games, reported Ben Bergen, of member station KPCC, in June.

"We believe that these extra four years will give us time to make our games better", Evans said. Some 83 percent of residents in Los Angeles County said they want L.A.to host the Olympics in 2028 in the survey.

The race began early in 2015 with a different USA candidate but the abysmal public support for Boston forced that city to part ways with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) who turned to Los Angeles instead just days before the application deadline. With failing public and government support the latter two dropped out, leaving Paris and Los Angeles as the last two cities standing. The commission visited both cities in May, finding both to be low-risk and high-reward propositions for the cities and the IOC.

Meanwhile LA, hosts in 1932 and 1984, gets the certainty of a Games without a bidding contest and early access to at least £1.8bn in shared revenue to kickstart its legacy plans 11 years early.

In exchange for the compromise, LA will grab an extra 300 million dollars (£227 million) or more that could help offset the uncertainties that lie ahead over an 11-year wait instead of seven. The L.A. team quickly marshalled its resources, working around the clock to reach an agreement with the USOC under which Los Angeles would take over for Boston. Numerous plans for 2028 are the same as they would have been if they were awarded for 2024.

Casey Wasserman, chair of the bid, wearing sneakers with his suit, promised to deliver Games that will be "California cool".
