New FBI data show violent crime increase in Horry County

In South Dakota, the state attorney general had earlier released its report showing the state bucks the national trend when it comes to homicides. Chicago experienced 781 murders last year, far more than any other major city and 63 percent higher than the year before.

A total of 17,250 murders were reported, an increase of 8.6 percent from 2015. There were almost 1.25 million violent crimes in the nation past year, according to the crime report.

The FBI released new data from its Uniform Crime Reporting Program on Monday. The numbers show 13,700 violent crimes which include murder, rape, assault, and robbery.

Sgt. Shaun Hampton, a Sacramento sheriff's spokesman, said the declines may be due to new data-driven strategies the department has implemented in recent months that use crime reports and 911 calls to identify where deputies should patrol.

The city of Sacramento saw a slight decrease of nearly 2 percent in violent crime and a 7.4 percent drop in property crimes. Small towns experienced a significant increase in homicides, but it was still less than half of that seen in big cities (8.4% vs. 20.3%).

There was no national pattern in violence in 2016: New York City saw historic or close to historic lows in shootings and murders, as murders in Chicago spiked.

Trump and North Korea war of words escalates
North Korean has launched two medium range ballistic missiles over Japan in recent weeks, and has threatened an attack on Guam. He used his oft-repeated moniker for Kim Jong Un, saying "Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime".

Russians fucking hacked into states' voting systems in the 2016 race
The government did not say who was behind the hacking attempts or provide details about what had been sought. Washington was one of 21 states targeted by Russian hackers, said Erich Ebel, a spokesman for Wyman.

Beyond a narrative told by national statistics, violent crime continues to be concentrated in a handful of large cities and experts caution that local nuance is critical to understanding the overall increase.

Since the early 1990s, as the U.S. population has grown, murders have dropped to about 14,000 a year.

In each of the specific crime categories - both for property and violent crimes, the total number of offenses reported declined, with two exceptions: robberies and burglaries. The number of reported homicides has tended to fluctuate from year to year over the last decade.

The Trump administration seized on the data as proof of the legitimacy of its tough-on-crime agenda. He noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had created a database to collect use-of-force statistics for law enforcement, which will include any encounter that ends with a person killed, seriously injured or when a gun is fired at them. Property crime dropped slightly.

The number of reported rapes fell by 14, from 95 to 81.

The FBI report, "Crime in the U.S.", is released annually and compiles the latest tally of crimes reported to local police.
