Schumer Praises Trump Over Debt Ceiling Increase, Hurricane Harvey Aid Deal

President Donald Trump went around his own party Wednesday, siding with Democrats on a deal to fund the government and raise federal borrowing limits for three months - all to help speed cash to hurricane survivors. "We allege the president's own statements make clear that DREAMers are being targeted based on their national origin", said Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D), who is heading up the effort with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey (D).

"We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer", Trump told reporters, referring to the two Democratic leaders but without mentioning Ryan or Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, who were also present at the meeting. The discussion arrived at a standstill, the source said, until Trump unexpectedly agreed with Democrats on the need for a three-month extension.

Trump's deal ensures the government can borrow money and pay its bills into December in exchange for $8 billion in Harvey aid.

. "I think that's ridiculous and disgraceful that [Democrats] want to play politics with the debt ceiling at this moment when we have fellow citizens in need to respond to these hurricanes so that we do not strand them", Ryan told reporters.

Under the agreement, Congress will seek to advance a bill that funds the government and raises the debt limit through 15 December.

"Trump just killed tax reform", the Senate aide said.

Republicans have always been anxious that Trump, who at times was a registered Democrat, would look to cut deals with the opposition party to secure victories - which he has had trouble achieving even with a Republican-led Congress.

Republican leaders, faced with conservative opposition to raising the debt limit, had hoped to advance a measure that would take the issue off the table until after the 2018 midterm elections.

House passes Hurricane Harvey relief aid
Some conservative GOP lawmakers in the House have suggested spending cuts elsewhere to offset the new outlay of money to FEMA. His Senate counterpart, Dick Durbin, said he was "open to it" but that it depended on the length of the debt limit increase.

The White House insisted that the move would allow Congress and the administration to focus on other important legislative priorities.

Pelosi and Schumer had advocated for a short-term rise in the debt ceiling, a move that would allow the US government to continue to borrow money.

The agreement includes bundling relief for Hurricane Harvey with a three-month continuing resolution that would keep the government funded through December 15, in addition to a three-month fix to raise the debt limit to be passed this week.

Nebraska Republican Senator Ben Sasse was one of them, saying in a tweet that "The Pelosi-Schumer-Trump deal is bad". The House passed aid for Harvey, 419 to 3, Wednesday. Ryan also said any immigration legislation the House would consider would have to have the support of Trump.

The House bill includes $7.4 billion for FEMA and $450 million for the Small Business Administration. Still, conservative groups like the Club for Growth oppose the initial package because it would add to the deficit.

"Democrats got exactly what they wanted, is for a three-month CR and a three -month debt ceiling to come due a few days before Christmas, which gives them the greatest leverage in the world to get exactly what they want later", Meadows said.
