Soul Singer Charles Bradley Dies At 68, Artists Mourn On Social Media

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Charles Bradley", his publicist said in a statement. But the cancer returned and spread to his liver and earlier this month he cancelled tour dates again due to his illness.

Bradley had been suffering from stomach cancer after first being diagnosed with the disease previous year.

A Florida native, Bradley as a teenager in NY discovered soul legend James Brown at the Apollo Theater and later found a career as an impersonator. After overcoming various personal setbacks (such as nearly dying due to an allergic reaction to penicillin and the murder of his brother), while performing as Black Velvet he was discovered by Gabriel Roth, the co-founder of soon to be iconic Brooklyn soul label Daptone Records, who partnered him with producer (and future Menahan Sreet Band member) Tom Brenneck to record some initial singles released between 2002 and 2010, culminating in 2011's debut album, No Time for Dreaming, released when Bradley was 62.

Soul singer Charles Bradley died Saturday at age 68 after a long bout with cancer. "Mr. Bradley was truly grateful for all the love he's received from his fans and we hope his message of love is remembered and carried on", it reads.

After the release of his debut album, Bradley began touring extensively, invariably closing his shows by descending the stage and thanking his audience, extending hugs to all.

"When I come back, I'll come back strong, with God's love". He was discovered by Daptone Records co-founder Gabriel Roth (a.k.a. Bosco Mann), and was invited to a rehearsal and writing session with Daptone artist and future producer Tom Brenneck. I told him as much a few days ago. "It took 62 years for somebody to find me, but I thank God".

Bradley, at a listening party for his 2016 record Changes, told this reporter - in a conversation often punctuated by Bradley holding up a finger, smiling and singing along to his new record - he'd helped construct the studio in which he'd later record.
