Soul singer Sampha wins prestigious Mercury Prize award

The 28 year old star, full name Sampha Sisay, released Process back in February this year, after a lengthy five-year recording process from when he initially broke through as a guest vocalist on SBTRKT's album.

His debut album, Process, was crowned the victor of the coveted prize during a ceremony on Thursday (14Sep17), and he dedicated his victory to his parents.

The Hyundai Mercury Prize is awarded each year to an outstanding album from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Fellow British-Sierra Leonean, Idris Elba, was there to present him with the award.

"Thank you to the judges for thinking that my album is good enough". "I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents...they just wanted to give us the best upbringing possible".
