Will Kenya's Court Ruling On Poll Results Set Precedent in Region?

Citing "irregularities" in the country's recent presidential election, Kenya's supreme court has nullified the election results in a shocking ruling on Friday.

Deputy President William Ruto struck similar themes, vowing that they will not allow the opposition to disband Kenya's electoral body, which was accused by opposition leader Raila Odinga of tolerating electoral malpractice during the August 8 general elections.

"It is indeed a very historic day for the people of Kenya, and by extension to the people of the continent of Africa".

Odinga has called for the election commission to resign and for some officials to face criminal prosecution.

Kenya's opposition coalition has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to respect the rule of law and respect the judiciary.

Announcing the decision, Chief Justice David Maraga argued that the election had "not been conducted in accordance with the constitution..." Kenya's police are still investigating at least 28 election-related deaths.

There are fears that the disputed election could bring a recurrence of the violence seen after the 2007 election, ABC reported.

Last month's election was the fourth time Odinga lost his presidential run - he had also contested the last three election results but lost each time. We clearly have a problem.

Hurricane Harvey's impact means gas prices are on the rise
Senior petroleum analyst Dan McTeague, of GasBuddy.com, predicted on Thursday that gas prices were about to skyrocket in Ontario. Calgary motorists are feeling the impact of Hurricane Harvey as gasoline prices jump and will likely continue rising.

Unsurprisingly Mr Kenyatta was less enthusiastic, saying of the judges that "six people have decided they will go against the will of the people".

They say that if it will be hard to choose and collect viable replacements for these heads to conduct these new elections, they suggested the United Nations conducting these new elections.

The judges ordered that new elections must take place within 60 days. The authorities in charge of the elections must obviously be told what exactly went wrong last time in order to be able to avoid those flaws the next time.

The election was annulled after the National Super Alliance (NASA), the country's opposition party, filed a petition to the court to overturn the result.

"They've made one of the most important decisions in Kenyan history", Cheeseman said, "and it's going to be 21 days before we find out why". The official results had given Kenyatta 54 percent of the vote to Odinga's 44 percent.

Maraga said this was a majority decision, with two judges dissenting.

After the election, global monitors from the EU, the African Union and the United States had said there was no major fraud on polling day and urged Mr Odinga to concede.
