Backwards-compatible original Xbox games appear online

I got to play a four-player round of Crimson Skies, with me on the original Xbox, another person on an Xbox One X, another on an Xbox One S, and the fourth on a launch Xbox One.

The announcement says that these select titles will run at higher resolutions, 9X the original pixel count as well as expanded color details.

Original Xbox games will be playable on Xbox One from October 24, as part of the next major Backwards Compatibility update. First, they'll all have nine times the on-screen pixels as their Xbox 360 versions did. You can see the changes in the video below, which shows the difference between Halo 3 on Xbox 360 and Xbox One X. The servers for these games have always been closed but you will still have the option for system link.

If you plan to revive some of these backward compatible titles, you will only need your original game disc or have it in your digital library for download on Xbox One. For instance, games that supported system link play - such as Crimson Skies - will still support system link play. And those playing games such as Knights of the Old Republic for the first time should be aware of the fact that these games are products of their time. Older games require more care and given the fact that the changes are substantial, combined with outdated licensing issues, it's understandable why it's taking them so long.

If you're hoping to play some online multiplayer then you're going to be disappointed here.

Now it sounds like the turmoil surrounding that launch also delayed the rollout of Xbox 360 backward compatibility on the system.
