Metropolitan Police said "the accident in the West London's South Kensington area is a collision and the incident is under investigation".

A spokesman later said the incident was not being treated as terrorism-related at this stage.

Crowds in the area, which is popular with families and tourists, fled screaming in panic when the auto veered onto the semi-pedestrianised Exhibition Road in South Kensington.

He said none of the head and leg injuries turned out to be serious and that most of the nine people who had been hospitalized have been discharged.

The Met said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening or life changing.

"When we arrived there the incident had already taken place and the Police were responding".

Armed police were at the scene, and a video posted on Twitter showed a man being held down on the road next to a black auto that appeared to have crashed.

The Natural History Museum is in the bustling section of South Kensington, popular with both Londoners and tourists.
