Las Vegas Sheriff: Massacre motive still unknown, investigators speaking with family

Paddock unleashed gunfire on Sunday from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel casino on the Las Vegas Strip, killing 58 and injuring almost 500 people.

"It's because this individual purposely hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is hard for us to find the answers to those actions", Lombardo said.

Meanwhile, a note discovered in Paddock's hotel room from where he opened fire featured hand-written calculations on where he needed to aim to increase his accuracy and number of kills, U.S. network CBS reported.

One of the first memorials services for victims of the Las Vegas shooting massacre was held Saturday in Bakersfield, California, for Jack Beaton, who died shielding his wife from gunfire.

Paddock also booked an Airbnb in a condo building overlooking the Life Is Beautiful festival in late September, leading investigators to gather video from the building to learn more.

But on Monday, the timeline changed.

Authorities have said that 12 of the weapons recovered from Paddock's hotel suite were equipped with so-called bump-stock devices that enable semi-automatic rifles to be operated as if they were fully automatic machine-guns.

Campos had been investigating an alarm that went off in another room on the same floor, signaling that a door had been left open.

"We still do not have a clear motive or reason", a frustrated Clark County Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said on Friday.

Wynn said Paddock didn't run up debts or have a gambling problem, and he had "the most vanilla profile one could possibly imagine". The hotel leaders then contacted police to share their findings.

Paddock was also revealed to be somewhat of a drifter, living largely at hotel casinos, where he lived for free (an amenity provided to certain gamblers) about "95% of the time".

The sheriff said authorities have received 200 accounts of Paddock traveling throughout Las Vegas, and that he "has never been seen with anyone else".

Stephen Paddock Specifically Asked Hotel For Room With View Of Lollapalooza
Minutes after the shooting began, a hotel security guard showed up outside his suite and Paddock shot him in the leg. It's also reported that when Paddock's vehicle left the hotel, one of his key cards was used to get into the room.

Earlier it was reported that Jesus Campos had come to Paddock's room amid the shooting, thus stopping his deadly gunfire.

Police, according to multiple law enforcement officials, still have found no definitive evidence to prove Paddock had an accomplice, and have not nailed down a definitive motive.

"Sorry to tell you, I don't know what he was going to do with all of that Tannerite", McMahill said. "So he had had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there".

But while some of the weapons were bought over the last 20 years, authorities believe 33 of the 47 guns - a lot of them rifles - were purchased between October 2016 and last month, an ATF spokesperson said.

Investigators are trying to trace that money.

Officer Dave Newton from the Las Vegas Police Department's K-9 unit said he noticed a note on the shooter's nightstand once officers breached the room.

Danley was out of the country during the shooting, and she said this was arranged by Paddock, saying that he bought her a plane ticket to the Philippines to visit relatives.

Investigators want to know whether Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, has information that can explain what sparked the massacre.

Even the No 2 official in the Federal Bureau of Investigation said yesterday he was surprised investigators have not uncovered more about why a man with no obvious criminal record would cause so much bloodshed.

Lombardo said Paddock was drilling a wall near a doorway but didn't finish. Stephen Paddock opened fire on an outdoor country music concert on Sunday killing dozens and injuring hundreds.

In the deposition, Paddock said he had a concealed weapons license in Texas, but, other than that, there was no discussion of guns.

Officers also found a handwritten note with calculations of distance and trajectory from his window to the crowd below, Newton said.
