Oculus Go: The $200 Standalone Headset VR Needs

Oculus' avatars are getting redesigned in the future, too - they'll be a bit more realistic looking, and closer to Facebook's VR cartoon avatars. The Oculus Go is a standalone VR headset, which means it does not require additional devices to function, like the Samsung Gear VR.

But is Oculus Go the affordable answer virtual reality has been waiting for?

ARKTIKA.1's current price is $29.99 Dollars (or your regional equivalent) and is available now for the Oculus Rift.

Barra announced that the company had developed custom lenses for the headset, which allow for a wide field of view.

It may turn out that Oculus Go supports some or all of Rift's full-bodied apps, but, right now, all it's confirmed to run are mobile VR experiences. The display is a fast-switch LCD screen with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, and it comes with integrated headphones.

Gartner analyst Brian Blau said there's still one hurdle the Oculus Go will have to overcome.

The real kicker in the Go is it will act as a standalone unit.

Oculus Go is positioned in the middle of the road, and this is an important link to make if Facebook wants to grow VR.

The new headset is made of a new breathable cloth, for improved comfort, and the Go can be used with glasses. Those figures include headsets for what is known as augmented reality. Zuckerberg said it will be available next year, after developers get their hands on a developer version, code-named Santa Cruz. The headset, which is due to arrive in early 2018, will be cross-compatible with titles designed for Samsung's VR platform and will ship to developers next month.

Oculus Go was announced with simply an image, price point, and vague release window shown behind Zuckerberg's head on the stage.

Earlier this week, Mark Zuckerberg caught some flak for leading us on a virtual reality (VR) tour of the destruction Maria wrought on Puerto Rico. The Rift bundle just got a price drop, and will now cost $399.
