Catalonia's regional government cast a disputed vote for independence on Sunday despite the opposition of the central government in Madrid, with police officers set on duty to prevent the vote from going ahead as planned.

The court, made up of 12 magistrates, is headed by Juan José González Rivas, who is part of the same political party as Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Puigdemont on Wednesday said he was disappointed by the king's intervention.

Yet, while the First Vice President said Sunday's violent scenes were "saddening", he stated that "proportionate use of force" is sometimes required.

The results announced by the Catalonian government indicated that 90 percent of voters were in favor of independence, but some have noted that this was virtually impossible to confirm as there was no official registry for voters and the counting was carried out in less-than-ideal circumstances.
