Tesla recalling 11000 Model X SUVs over rear seats issue

Tesla has confirmed a voluntary recall of 11,000 of its Model X vehicles.

Palo Alto, California-based Tesla had recalled 2,700 Model X SUVs in the United States in April 2016 due to a faulty locking hinge in the third-row seats.

The recall involves vehicles with second-row seats that can fold flat, made between 28 October 2016 and 16 August 2017. If improperly installed, the latch may not properly engage the seat, causing it and passengers seated into it to dislodge from the vehicle during a crash. Tesla said it believes only 3 per cent of the recalled vehicles are affected by the issue, and a company spokesperson said it hasn't received any reports of accidents or injuries.

Owners of impacted units will be notified by Tesla.

Tesla will be utilizing its mobile fix service to conduct repairs as a part of this recall - we can address 100% of these repairs via mobile service, and customers will have the choice to do that or to bring their auto into a Service Center.

The voluntary recall comes at a time when investors and Wall Street seem divided about the prospects for the green automaker. Tesla has had larger, more important recalls in the past, with some to do with seatbelt defects, and they've affected far larger numbers, too. Customers can choose to use the mobile service or to visit a service center, but either way, no new parts are necessary. Model X has received the highest rating in every category and subcategory in independent crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and we are committed to ensuring that Model X remains the safest SUV in the world.

Tesla had a great appreciation for Model X design.
