Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Operating Systems Group, revealed Windows 10 Mobile - the company's OS for smartphones and tablets - won't receive further updates.

Microsoft ended support for Windows Phone 8.1, the most popular version of its mobile operating system in July.

Microsoft has told its die-hard Windows 10 Mobile fans not to expect new features for the platform.

Microsoft started gutting its phone business previous year, making thousands of job cuts and the decision to drop the company's mantra "mobile-first, cloud-first".

Microsoft doesn't plan to let existing Windows Phone users down - there will be security updates. Microsoft tried paying companies to produce apps and even wrote them itself when creators couldn't or wouldn't get involved, but the number of users was "too low for most companies to invest". Many companies have stopped developing and withdrawn their apps from Windows Store during the previous year. There won't be any new features or hardware update but Redmond would continue to shower bug fixes and security updates. "Choose what's best for you".

With this move, Microsoft isn't withdrawing from the mobile business entirely.

However, some manufacturers - including the UK's Wileyfox and Germany's TrekStor - had unveiled new models powered by Windows 10 Mobile as recently as last month.

"And, now they're putting the Edge browser on iOS and Android, which will help be more closely aligned with those platforms", Gold said, referring to last Thursday's announcement of Edge for rival mobile devices.

He said that while Microsoft would support the "many companies" that had adopted the platform, he had switched to Android for the diversity of its apps and hardware. Upon its launch, major smartphone manufacturers like Nokia and HTC and even Samsung made Windows Phone devices.
