A man who was accidentally locked inside of a beer cooler at a gas station stayed inside and helped himself to beer overnight.

According to police records, the incident happened at the Kwik Trip on Central Avenue in Marshfield.

The man was automatically locked inside when midnight struck, officials said.

Police said Jeremy Van Ert, 38, told officers he was shopping at the Kwik Trip store Tuesday night in Marshfield and ended up trapped in the store's cooler when employees locked it for the night at 11:50 p.m. They said the cooler had a glass door he could have knocked on to be let out.

When he was out, he didn't pay for the alcohol he had consumed.

Police say a customer spotted the man inside the cooler around 5:50 a.m. the next day. He also fell over a stack of 30 pack Busch Light Cans, breaking three of the cases open, according to Wausau Daily Herald.
