By 1991, DC had acquired all rights to the characters. However, Levi is no stranger to starring in superhero movies, as the 37-year-old actor can be seen next week in DC competitor Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok.

Captain Marvel was ranked as the 55th greatest comic book character of all time by Wizard magazine. Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg is lined up to direct the project under Warner Bros' New Line banner which itself is a fairly bold move for a character aimed generally at younger readers. The $15 million horror sequel has earned a big $303 million worldwide since opening in August. Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (cover-dated February 1940), published by Fawcett Comics.

Levi's response was accompanied by a piece of fan art created by Australian artist Bosslogic, which imagines what the actor will look like suited up as Shazam. He's also not kidding about the outpouring of love and support. However it's only now that the title character has been cast, with Chuck himself, Zachary Levi taking on the role.

Oil prices rise as USA stockpiles expected to decline
The US government's Energy Information Administration releases its report on Wednesday. The pact runs to March 2018 and they are considering extending it.

Exactly how much he'll bring to the DCEU remains to be seen, but with a brilliant team forming around the film and the movie acting as just one of the films slotting into proceedings, everything's looking bright for DC Films. Aside from Levi's work in the Thor series, he was also part of the main ensemble in NBC's Heroes Reborn miniseries, so he knows his way around superpowers.

The next DC film to go into production, Shazam! Zachary Levi is going to need to pack on the pounds if he is going to take on the likes of Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam or even Henry Cavill's Superman! THR notes that no premiere date has been set yet but New Line hopes to have the superhero feature on screens in 2018.
