Later on Wednesday, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai, signed an agreement between Boeing and flydubai for the 225 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, saying: "Today's order underlines the success of flydubai's founding vision in changing the way people travel across the region. I can see a place in transcontinental United States of America and Asia", he said, adding it would suit markets with congested airports but relatively low freight traffic, where airlines may not be willing to bet on a traditional twin-aisle jet sitting more than 250 people.

According to commentators, the deal marked a dramatic turnaround for Airbus, which had been lagging behind Boeing in the contest for orders so far this year and had a bad start to the 12 -16 November air show.

Also on Wednesday, Airbus won a $49.5 billion order from Indigo Partners' portfolio of low-priced airlines that include Frontier, Wizz Air, Volaris, and JetSmart.

For Airbus, the 430-plane deal with Indigo Partners is a much-needed win after a year of struggling to keep up with Boeing.

Until Wednesday, the only major deal announced at the Dubai Air Show came on Sunday when long-haul carrier Emirates purchased 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners in a 15.1 billion dollar (£11.4 billion) deal.

"It's ended up going out on a high", airline analyst John Strickland of JLS Consulting said.

AerCap is the world's largest lessor of the Airbus A320neo; and the largest customer of the Boeing 787, with 116 on order and owned.

The agreement signed by the aviation company includes the rights to turn up the 787-9s of the aircraft, providing the airline increased flexibility for the global network and future fleet it envisages to command in the coming years.
