Amazon announces Lord of the Rings TV adaptation

In a release, Amazon noted that the series will be set in Middle-earth and will "explore new storylines" that precede The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in the famous trilogy in which Frodo Baggins and his eclectic cohort attempt to rid their land of the all-powerful ring. Peter Jackson turned the books into a trilogy, but Amazon doesn't necessarily have to abide by that structure. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series.

'The team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien's original writings'. The upcoming Amazon Prime Original Series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema, the division of Warner Bros.

So it's both exciting and concerning to hear that Amazon will be adapting The Lord of the Rings for television.

But even if trends shift unexpectedly and there is another massive breakout hit, does it seem likely that the biggest show to follow Thrones will be something that so closely resembles and inspired it? It's not hard to see why studio executives would be pursuing a show like this, considering the movies collectively made almost $3 billion (£2.28 billion) at the Box Office and were nominated for a whopping 30 Academy Awards - of which they won 17. Like any good television show, it looks like we'll have to stay tuned. Tolkien crafted a detailed history of Middle-earth called The Simarillion, which covered the creation of the world, epic wars, intrigue, the downfall of entire societies, dwarf and elvish history, and much more.

Uber to appeal after losing challenge to ruling on drivers' employment rights
Denmark banned it, Bulgaria's Supreme Court ruled against it, and Hungary said the service was illegal - just to name a few. Jenning said it's conceivable that some Uber drivers could end up being workers and some could end up being self-employed.

There is no word yet on when The Lord of the Rings TV series will begin airing but you can expect it within the next three years, probably premiering after the Game of Thrones spin-off has already begun airing. While we still aren't certain about specific details, there's plenty to choose from.

It is also a proven pop culture commodity.

A world-renowned literary work, and victor of the International Fantasy Award and Prometheus Hall of Fame Award, The Lord of the Rings novels was named Amazon customers' favorite book of the millennium in 1999 and Britain's best-loved novel of all time in BBC's The Big Read in 2003. Amazon acquired multiseason, global television rights to the project.
