Avengers X-Men A Possibility; Disney Wants To Buy FOX Studios

According to CNBC sources, the Walt Disney Company has been holding talks to purchase some of 21st Century Fox - the film studio that still retains rights to those Marvel characters. It would be barred from buying the Fox broadcasting network and was not in talks to buy local affiliates, Fox News or Fox Business Channel.

The deal would leave Fox as a smaller company more focused on news and sports, not entertainment programming and movies. Presumably, it would take an insane amount of money to make it happen, but if Fox have already been willing to entertain sales talks, you have to feel that something is possible. But Disney could acquire Fox's film and television studios, global assets like Sky and Star, and Fox's cable networks including FX and National Geographic.

Fox reportedly believes they will be more competitive if they focus their properties around news and sports.

CNBC reports that the talks are not ongoing, but that the companies have been talking in recent weeks.

While Marvel Studios (which is owned by Disney) has regained the rights to properties in the past, this would undoubtedly be one of the studio's most important acquisitions in its history given its potential. Besides the movie studio, TV production, and assets like Star and Sky, Disney would gain entertainment networks like National Geographic and FX. He assumes Fox shareholders would get equity in the larger Disney.

"I see lots of synergies for Disney". The Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox broadcast and Fox Sports will remain as they are.

Disney has been struggling with subscriber declines at ESPN, its biggest network, and is planning to launch direct-to-consumer video streaming services to reach younger audiences that have shunned traditional cable and satellite offerings. Fox's recent hits have included The Planet of the Apes and X-Men franchises while Disney controls Pixar and the Star Wars series.

It'd definitely be interesting.
