Iran: Thousands march on 1979 anniversary, chant anti-Israel, anti-US slogans

Thousands of Iranian demonstrators have taken to Taleghani Avenue, the street facing the former US embassy in Tehran, to mark their National Day of Fight Against Global Arrogance.

The vote came two weeks after US President Donald Trump's decision to decertify the Iranian nuclear deal, as part of Washington's efforts to toughen its policy toward Iran without undermining the agreement.

In the capital city of Tehran, the rallies to mark the anniversary of the landmark move are held at the venue of the former USA embassy, which is known by Iranians as "Den of Espionage". Still, the Europeans share United States concern over Iran's ballistic missile program and "destabilizing" regional behavior. It was the first time Iran had displayed a missile during the annual gathering. Senior Iranian officials continue to claim that the Islamic Republic's missile program is exclusively defensive in nature, and state that it is not negotiable.

Mr Trump refused to recertify the 2015 landmark nuclear deal between Iran and world powers in October and the U.S. has imposed more sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile programme.

On November 4, 1979, a group of Iranian university students took over the USA diplomatic mission, which they believed had turned into a centre of espionage aimed at overthrowing the then-nascent Islamic Republic. State TV said similar celebrations were being held in other Iranian cities and towns.

Opening day of enrollment for federal health insurance marketplace
Between 2016 and 2017, an additional 386,052 New Yorkers signed up for health insurance through the ACA, according to the city. They say the closer it gets to the deadline, the more the websites that process the applications can get slowed down.

Protesters beat effigies of Trump with sticks in front of the former embassy compound while what appeared to be a dummy ballistic missile was put on display in a sign of defiance following new U.S. sanctions. Under that deal, most global sanctions on Iran were lifted in exchange for Tehran curbing nuclear activity.

The anniversary has become a day of Iranian nationalism.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have risen again, at a time when Tehran has been improving political and military ties with Russian Federation.

Mr Shamkhani, alluding to Mr Trump's threats against North Korea, said even United States allies know that Mr Trump "has no power to realise his bluffs, against Iran, too". Many Iranians call it the "den of spies".
