Kamworor holds off fellow Kenyan Kipsang to win NYC Marathon

Flanagan, the 2010 NY marathon runner-up, was sixth in last year's Rio Olympic marathon.

American women had not won in NY since Miki Gorman claimed her second consecutive title in 1977.

Kamworor broke away from a pool of four athletes with three kilometres to go to win in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds.

Before Flanagan's performance Sunday, Miki Gorman in 1977 was the last American woman to win the famed marathon. Kenyan Mary Keitany, who had won in NY in each of the past three years and set a world record in April, finished second. A pack of nine competitors consistently jockeyed with Keitany for the lead, including three runners making their NY debut: Kenya's Betsy Saina; Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska; and Sara Dossena, an Italian triathlete.

The cause was to raise charges against them for incitement to a rebellion, they could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. All of them refused to respond to questioning with the exception of former minister Villa, who spoke for about 40 minutes.

On the men's side, Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor beat out countryman and 2014 victor Wilson Kipsang for his first major marathon victory, with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds.

The 2017 event was held just five days after a deadly Manhattan truck attack that left eight people dead.

Flanagan's win disrupted the marathon dominance of Kenya's Mary Keitany. She finished sixth in the Rio Olympics marathon.

After taking the lead in the 23rd mile, the 24-year-old 2015 NY runner-up had to contend with Kipsang, whose final push brought him ever so close to his countryman. Flanagan also took bronze in the 10,000-meter contest at the 2008 Olympics, but in March, the International Association of Athletics Federations ruled that the silver medalist, Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse, was being sanctioned for a positive doping case and was disqualified for a two-year period that included the Beijing Games, making Flanagan's the second-fastest time. He settled for second in 2015 to Kenyan Stanley Biwott after being overtaken late in the race.
