Keystone pipeline in South Dakota shut down after leak detected

The Keystone Pipeline leaked about 5,000 barrels of oil in South Dakota on Thursday, according to TransCanada.

TransCanada says that expects the pipeline to remain shut down as the company responds to the leak.

TRP has not yet provided a reason for the spill, which occurred just four days before the Nebraska Public Service Commission is expected to announce a decision on an 830K-barrel expansion of the Keystone system through the state.

The company said that crews shut down the pipeline Thursday morning after a drop in pressure was detected resulting from an oil leak that's under investigation.

TransCanada is seeking to expand its Keystone pipeline network.

Amherst is about 200 miles north of Sioux Falls, S.D., and about 25 miles from the state's border with North Dakota. In April 2016, TransCanada shut down the pipeline after a local resident reported seeing oil seeping to the surface in South Dakota. It already had been approved by most of the states along the route.
