No odd-even scheme until Delhi govt proves it is effective: NGT

Hours after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) gave conditional nod to the odd-even, the Delhi government cancelled its plan to implement the road rationing scheme from Monday, expressing its inability to implement the scheme from Monday without exemptions given to women and two-wheelers.

The green body said, "The Supreme Court has not passed any order asking the state government to implement the odd-even scheme". However, the tribunal has asked the state government to prove whether the scheme helped in reducing the pollution levels in the city when it was implemented in 2016. You (Delhi government) don't have enough CNG buses. The government does not want to take risks with women security.

In a statement, the government later said that it has chose to "defer" its implementation. It has asked you to implement the measures to combat pollution.

The NGT also asked the Delhi Traffic Police to deploy its personnel at traffic lights, observing that nearly all the main roads in the city are witness to diesel vehicles which are older than 10 years and petrol vehicles which are older than 15 years. "Act immediately or we will attach government treasury", it said.

The odd-even scheme will be in place from 8 am to 8 pm and there will exemptions for women drivers and two-wheelers.
